Make a smart home less fragile
Document ownership, fallback controls, updates, and privacy before adding another device.
A calm sequence
- 01
Name what must still work offline
Lights, locks, heat, alarms, and accessibility equipment need a sensible fallback during internet, service, phone, or account failures.
- 02
Choose the household owner
Know which account owns the home, subscriptions, automations, and stored video. Use individual access for family members instead of sharing the primary password.
- 03
Secure the foundation
Use a unique password and multifactor authentication for the primary account. Keep the router and devices updated and remove default credentials where they still exist.
- 04
Review collection and retention
Check what microphones, cameras, sensors, and apps collect, how long recordings or history remain, and which household members or guests can access them.
- 05
Maintain an exit plan
Record model names, account ownership, subscriptions, and factory-reset instructions. Before selling, moving, or gifting a device, remove it from the household account and reset it.
Pause when you see
- A lock, light, or thermostat with no manual fallback
- One shared password for the whole family
- A used device still attached to the prior owner’s account
