Wi-Fi is slow in one room. Find the bottleneck first.
Test location, device, and internet service before buying more equipment.
A calm sequence
- 01
Make the test fair
Use the same device, the same activity or test, and roughly the same time. Pause large downloads and note whether the problem affects one device or several.
- 02
Compare near and far
Test beside the router, halfway to the room, and in the room. Thick walls, floors, metal, appliances, mirrors, and crowded radio channels can change the result.
- 03
Improve placement
Move the router into the open, higher, and more central if possible. Avoid cabinets, the floor, and hiding it behind a television or large metal object.
- 04
Check the service path
Restart the modem and router using the provider’s instructions, inspect cables, and compare a wired test if available. A service outage or failing modem will not be fixed by more Wi-Fi nodes.
- 05
Add equipment only with a reason
For a persistent coverage gap, compare a wired access point, mesh system, or extender based on the home layout and ability to run cable. Keep the receipt until the actual room is tested.
Pause when you see
- Buying an extender before testing the router location
- Testing different devices and treating the results as comparable
- Placing a mesh node inside the dead zone
